If you were one the millions of people who loved "Coco" the Disney movie you will probably loved the Mexican Altars "ofrendas" that appear on the screen.
The purpose of this beautiful tradition is to keep our loved ones who passed away in our memories. Ofrendas are meant to extend a welcome to our loved ones into our home once more.
Legend says on November 2nd, God allows their souls to come down to earth to enjoy everything we put in our ofrenda. Isn't that amazing?
Here I'll tell you what you need to recreate a typical Dia de Muertos ofrenda:
First you need to build and decorate your ofrenda, here are some authentic ideas for you to buy online:
Ceramic Skulls
Authentic Papel Picado
Grab a photo of your loved one, it will look nicer if is a framed photo, you may also want to decorate it so it looks more colorful so it blends with your ofrenda.
Then go shopping for Bread of the Dead, usually sold at Mexican bakeries.
Cook a delicious feast. What did your loved one enjoy to eat when he/she was alive? Cook that! Tip: Use any clay/ceramic plate in your kitchen so display the food so it looks more authentic.
Prepare her/his favorite drink and put it on the altar. Tequila? Why not!
If you have children don't forget to include them in this celebration, it will bring back memories and create new ones for them.
Don't forget to take a photo of your altar and tag @LaProvidencia.us so other people can see your amazing art.
Welcome to the tradition!
Love,
Lilia
